Full Day Ria Formosa Birdwatching Tour

Embark on a full-day adventure at the breathtaking Ria Formosa, a perfect destination for birdwatching enthusiasts and nature lovers. This excursion, available every Sunday, promises an enriching experience for people of all ages, offering an 8-hour journey covering 4 kilometres through a stunning landscape.

Tour Highlights:

Morning Session: Our journey begins near Faro airport, at a complex of saltpans and lagoons. These areas are prime locations for observing Flamingos and Shelducks. Additionally, the reedbeds around this zone are filled with the melodies of Cetti’s Warbler. In the lagoons, winter brings a variety of ducks including Mallards, Gadwalls, Teals, Shovelers, Wigeons, Pochards, Tufted Ducks, and Red-crested Pochards.
 

Midday Attractions: We will traverse a golf course en route to a bird hide, a spot rich in birdlife such as Hoopoes, Azure-winged Magpies, and Waxbills. The hide itself offers a splendid view of a lagoon, home to breeding Purple Swamphen, Black-headed Weavers, and Little Bitterns.

Afternoon Session:

Our afternoon will be spent near Tavira, exploring the saltpans which form an integral part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. This locale is particularly favored by waders, and we often spot Flamingos, Avocets, and Black-winged Stilts feeding in the lagoons. The dykes separating these lagoons are frequented by Kentish and Ringed Plovers, Dunlins, Sanderlings, Little Stints, and Little Terns. Notably, Audouin’s Gulls, alongside Yellow-legged and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, are regulars in this area.

Meeting Point and Departure:

Our rendezvous point is the A ROCHA centre. The departure time varies throughout the year, aligning with sunrise timings. Upon booking, we will confirm the exact time for your activity. Transportation to the location is provided in one of our comfortable vehicles.

The package includes the guidance of an expert, a comprehensive checklist, access to field guides, and a refreshing drink either midway or at the end of the day. All transportation costs are encompassed in the tour price.
